Recall alert: More than 200K battery-powered mowers recalled due to fire hazard

More than 200,000 battery-operated lawnmowers have been recalled due to a fire hazard.

In a news release on Thursday, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said that approximately 217,500 TTI Outdoor Power Equipment mowers in the United States -- plus an additional 28,400 in Canada -- are being recalled. The RYOBI 40-Volt brushless 21″ cordless battery-powered mowers have a push-on connector inside the powerhead that can overheat, the agency said.

TTI Outdoor Power Equipment, Inc., is based in Anderson, South Carolina.

According to the CPSC, there have been 97 reports of the mower overheating while it is in use. That includes five reports of fires and two cases where consumers suffered minor burn injuries, the CPSC said.

The mowers have a black cutting deck with a gray top housing, along with a black bag with RYOBI printed on it, the agency said.

The items were sold at Home Depot and Direct Tools Factory Outlet stores nationwide, in Canada, and online at www.homedepot.com and www.directtoolsoutlet.com from January 2021 through January 2025. Thw mowers ranged in price between $500 and $700.

According to the CPSC, the recall only includes model numbers RY401014BTLUS, RY401014US, RY401140US, RY401015BTLUS, RY401015US, RY401150US, RY401140US-Y, RY401150US-Y, RY401020, and RY401200 with the following serial numbers: KC21032D010001 – KC21327N999999.

According to the recall notice, consumers should immediately stop using the recalled mower. They should contact TTI Outdoor Power Equipment, Inc. for instructions to dismantle the mower, and to receive a free replacement 21-inch walk-behind mower.
