His death was confirmed to CNN by Joshua Goldbard, CEO of MobileCoin, Lee’s current employer. He was 43.

According to Bloomberg, an “outpouring of grief” from the tech community followed news of his death. “Bob was a dynamo, a force of nature,” Goldbard said in a statement to CNN. “Bob was the genuine article.”

In a news release, San Francisco Police Department said around 2:30 a.m. officers were called to the 300 block of Main Street. When officers arrived, they found Lee with apparent stab wounds.

Lee was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, but later died, police say.

Lee was a veteran Silicon Valley technology executive and software engineer who early in his career helped develop Android for Google. He was the first chief technology officer for Square, co-founded by Jack Dorsey, who went on to found Twitter. Square launched the money transfer app CashApp in 2013. The app also lets users trade Bitcoin.

In 2021, Lee joined MobileCoin, a cryptocurrency and digital payments app, as chief product officer, according to CNN.

“Bob was made for the new world,” he told Bloomberg. “He was the quintessential creator, leader and consumate hacker. Bob sure had an impact that will last far beyond his short life on Earth,” Goldberg said.

No arrests have been made.
